TURKEY DAY

This is what we do on Thanksgiving: block traffic!

My sister fries the turkey and the brothers gather, away from the fryer, to talk football.

If you ask them, they are 'watching the kids.' Notice the 'kid' on the bike.

Oh, and the bean pole fella, he's not one of ours. The niece brought him...

It was a beautiful day, once the fog lifted!

Clown on Roller Skates!

There was a clown on roller skates... That can only mean it's a parade!

The parade started at 1. My nephew was at my door at 8:30 ready to go. We're like 2 minutes from the parade start.

We rewatched entelodont, again. We made cut-out John Cenas and The Rock. We rode our bikes.

The parade was candylicious. Over 3# of sugary badness.

Mine! All Mine!

I love my candy catcher!

Doctor Who Time!

Not responsible for the bad poetry... okay, so I am. I'm just so excited! I was overcome with verse!

Doctor Who is Coming!
I've been shouting all week.
Weenie roast Saturday
with adult drinks?
I think not,
Must decline
My plans are set in stone

Call me a Dork
Call me a Nerd
Just don't call me after 9 PM
(eastern daylight savings time)
I'm engaged
I'll be busy
My TV and a Fez
Watching "Let's Kill Hitler"
Before dashing off to bed.

Top of the Mountain

Top of the chair lift

My trip to Ober Gatlinburg was very fun, but I only have pictures from the top of the chair lift. I could have sworn I took more pictures than that, but apparently not. It's okay though, because some of my best memories of the trip happened at the top of the mountain. First, the view is gorgeous, gentle and majestic at the same time. This is a mountain I wanted to hike up. I'm like as not to see a hill and climb it. Second, all the boys loved it. It was strange because there was nothing to do but look and listen, when the band was playing. Third, there was a band.

Future stars and cowboys
When they started to play, the twins, Robert and Owen, started dancing, just like they were at a hoe-down. And when the band asked the boys to come on stage and put on a cowboy hat and sing, the twins were gone before you could blink. Jeremiah needed some extra encouragement. When Owen was handed a microphone I thought he was going to swoon! He and Robert went to town on She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain. I couldn't stop laughing, I wish I'd recorded it.

View from the top
We were fortunate that it only sprinkled a little and the sun didn't come out from behind the clouds until nearly 4. I think Ober will be a place will will want to revisit next summer and perhaps this winter; the twins want to learn to ski, heaven help us.

Hike-atastrope!

I haven't been on the trails in too long. I like long, lonely trail runs or hikes. Just me and nature, alone, relaxing, enjoying aloneness.

Not that you could tell it by my attitude yesterday.
I do not want to run,
I do not want to hike,
I do not like moving
and healthy stuff and whatnot.
Lazy I am and lazy I'll be,
until I reach that vaunted age of 30.

And that ain't never gonna happen. I stopped aging at 29.

Making myself tie my shoes was a challenge. It got easier as I started walking, until I nearly stepped in horse crap. There aren't supposed to be horses on this trail. WTF! I should have taken it as a sign. After 14 minutes of hard hiking, I was ready to turn around, but if I was doing this I was making it to the Pinnacle. Two miles straight up the side of a mountain. Until I nearly stepped on a snake.

It was just a brown rat snake. I'm pretty sure it was a brown rat snake. I even managed to take a picture of it as it would not move! It just raised it's snaky little head and stared at me. I tried shooing it. It just raised it's head higher. I tried going over it. My feet had a different idea. And then what my feet were thinking made it to my brain. The trail to the Pinnacle narrows to a single track, with brush hanging over the side... where snakes can hide.

It was silly. I could have picked the snake up and moved him; I probably would have if anyone had been with me. Alone and snakes does not a brave soul make, at least for me.

So I turned back down the mountain. But I hadn't gone far enough, so I turned down the Tennessee Road to hike around the Iron Furnace. There I met my next obstacle. A herd of deer!

Deer, you ask? Bambis? Yes. Bambis. Have you ever been mowed down by a herd of deer? Well, I haven't either! But I was almost this one time... (I might be exaggerating, but only by a little). The deer must have sensed my complete cowardice, because they looked at me with contempt when I tried to shoo them. Two of them even followed me when I again turned back.

At this point, I was thinking I'd next run into a bear. There was no bear. And I'm a shameless coward, at least that's the excuse I'm using today.

Ober 2011

Nothing really captures our trip like this picture. Actually, anything else would be a better representation. I saw this and nearly rolled on the ground with laughter. The guy says, "Smile for the cameras," and teenagers give you this...

Had to pay for this one, but I'll post some I took later along with a review of Ober Gatlinburg. It's a pretty fun place.

Went to a Wedding

Sat at table number 13. Our candles burned Gothic style. Got hit in the head with the bridal bouquet (some people called this a catch; I did not.) Danced. Laughed. Drank wine. Did not catch anything on fire with the sparklers. I call that a win.

Weekend Lost

Nothing I plan goes to, well, plan.

I did watch Haven. It was an excellent episode. Just fun to watch.

On Saturday, I read exactly 8 pages of A Feast for Crows, only ran 3 miles, and didn't even touch my comic books. Do you know why?

Hungry Mother State Park
My nephew came over and turned my TV on Shark Week. Shark Week you defeat me! I don't have to turn it on, but once it's on, I can't turn it off! Okay, Shark Week doesn't account for my barely run... that's all on me. But hey! It was the weekend.

I was even mostly social with my family at the reunion Sunday. Ran, ate, paddle-boated. It rained most of the day, so no sitting in the sun or swimming. I love this park though, it's so peaceful.

Maybe I will sneak in a read at work. Shh... don't tell the boss.

Weekend!

Do you have big plans for the weekend? I do! Awesome huge ones!

Haven: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]I'm going to watch Haven the best show on SyFy (I still feel silly spelling it that way.) Then I'm going to bed! At 11! Cause I'm old!

Tomorrow, I'm going for a run, probably 6 or 7 miles, then rereading George R. R. Martin's A Feast for Crows. I'm on team Cersei is the best villain evar! I'm working my way back through the series before I read the 5th book.

A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4)And when the battery goes dead on my cheapy e-reader, I've still got a stack of comic books to read.

Sunday is a family reunion, one I actually like to attend. One problem, I'm expecting a new nephew (or niece) this weekend. Decisions, decisions. Either way, I'll still be reading...

What a weekend!

FRIDAY FRIDAY

It's a beer!

It's a meal!

It's a beer and a meal in one!

It's also the perfect companion to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Let the evening unwind!

A Small Vent

Flood clean up is still ongoing and it appears that FEMA is offering individuals in my area no assistance. The local governments are getting some aid which is good, but not nearly good enough.

The pace at which the clean-up is progressing.
I suppose that the financial climate in DC is such that aid money is tight. But not being able to access the Small Business Administration loans that could be made available to the community feels almost punitive. I know next to nothing about how government bureaucracies work. I think I'd go mad if I had to learn. I do know that my community is suffering. Other counties are getting aid for hail damage. We can't get aid for an historic flood that ruined cars, houses, property, and land. I've been told that the local emergency management agency had the feds in for a reevaluation. That is still a ray of hope, not bright enough to allay my worries, but hope enough to keep me, well, hopeful.

My business will pull through; I'm used to working with nothing. My community will pull through; it's going to be a struggle. I just wish... it doesn't matter what I wish. Wishing isn't like fishing. At least then I (usually) end up with something to eat.

Back to work world!

Another Week, Another Abandoned Chore

What does it say for me when I think this is succss? All I've got is a fist full of excuses and no real improvement.

Ah well. It's the weekend. Better luck to be had next week.

Weight Gain and a Tangent

I have been totally off my game for nearly 2 months now. No consistent exercising, no watching the diet. I'm back to the old habits of couch potato-ness and feeding my stress.

I haven't done a run over 6 miles in 2 months, I haven't done a run of any sort in the past 3 weeks, my yoga mat is collecting dust, and my jeans... let's not talk about my jeans...

And I can't seem to make myself stop!

It's like I'm trying to implode so I don't have to deal with all the stressful things going on in my life, but I can't really blame it on the stress since I got lazy way before the stress started piling up. I'm calling it my summer slump and that isn't really a very good excuse. There are no good excuses.

It's time to confess my relapse into a junk-food-bad-tv addict and get back on track.

New Dawn
the one on the left is Terminator Pig... duh.
Although I feel like those feral pigs in Texas have torn up the track so bad I can't even see it. You know those pigs make me think about the entledont, better know around these parts as Terminator Pig! Just imagine the giant monster pig with the extremely goofy looking face tearing up the prairie, intimidating every herbivore and carnivore for that mater, eating whatever  he wants, even the last delicious piece of Hershey Bar pie on somebody else's plate. *growl, snort, root up the ground-- steal the pie!

No! Don't steal the pie! Don't steal the pie!

Syma S107/S107G R/C Helicopter - RedDoes anyone have a helicopter? I can't even stay on mental track.

The Beginning Feels Like the End

How does anyone get anything done when the shelves and filing cabinets are destroyed? This is just a small fraction of stuff needing a new home.
I have 2 trunks I have yet to begin emptying and I'm already out of space.
Enough with the complaining. This is my opportunity to purge old, outdated catalogs, samples and general stacks of "why did I keep this." Time to get back to digging myself out of the flood.

Clean up is Messy!

I'm an Idiot!
I can't take my sister anywhere! But she's useful to have around, even if she's messy.

Spacey McDonald's

This was the best part of Roswell if you're one of the Twin Terrors. The alien museum is moving across the street. While the twins didn't let me absorb the whole museum, they did enjoy the McDonald's and that made it fun for everybody.

A Beach with No Ocean

Tip leading the charge

White Sands, New Mexico has to be one of the most awesome places on the planet. The vast and awesome barrenness captures your gaze and refuses to let go. You want to stare across the ocean of sand until you can no longer see.

Plus, running up and down the dunes was AWESOME!
(In the fun sense)

Best part of the desert. Everyone should go.
(awesome too much?)

Breakfast of Champs

Made it to Nashville- in one piece! The 2 plane rides weren't the greatest, but I didn't get gropped at the El Paso airport. In fact, it was one of my best flight days if you based it on staff and crew.

Of course, I wake up with the sun. Staying up so late wasn't a great idea. Doesn't matter. Got work done this morning and found moon pies in my sister's cabinet! Maybe I'll get a nap in!

Here's hoping!

Tequila!

What you don't see are the 2 shots of Patron Silver. Alcohol makes 12 hours with the Twin Terrors seem fun! Yay Tequila!

It also made for a great night of sleep!

It's WonderWoman!

Ate lunch at Whataburger. Their trademark looks strangely familiar...

(We don't have these at home, I love regional burger joints... I'll blog about Pal's one of these days!)

Frustration!

With the clean up not anywhere near completion, I feel a bit guilty for leaving on a road trip. But it's not like I can just skip it. I'm helping my sister-in-law drive her sons across country. My brother finally got a job (many time zones away) and the store gets hit with the worst flood in history. Tomorrow, everyone else will be hard at work, while I will be driving The Twins Terrors and The Agitator to what might as well be the moon!

I fear for my sanity. I fear for the brothers' sanity. I need a nap and a million dollars, but hey! those things will only get you so far. Done blathering-- for now.

What I Work For!

Store flooded Monday. Spending the rest of the week cleaning. Made $12 today; spent it on ice cream for these three!

Receding Waters

The brothers cleared the road this morning. Had to move a car, a water tank, two bundles of lumber and several pallets. Not to mention all the brush and mud.

Monster Attack!

This is what I'm forced to do after an exhausting day at work. Before supper! (face by the monster himself)

On a side note, THIS IS NOT MY FAULT. I DID NOT TURN HIM INTO A GEEK. IT'S NOT LIKE GEEKERY IS A BAD THING!

Marathon Recap

Race day came too early. Dawn picked Mary and me up at 5:30. I was ready to go just not ready to run. And that fact was made glaringly evident when we drove past the Mile 25 marker to pull into the parking garage. I thought I'd lose the little bite of breakfast I'd eaten.

Seus, Dawn, Mary
We walked the short distance to the start, found a warm spot inside and did a final gear check.

The sun and the temperatures began to rise as start time inched closer. I began feeling sicker. I didn't feel like chatting. I felt like throwing up and running back to the car. It was about a half mile from the start. What the hell was I thinking, signing up for a marathon!

Mary and Dawn had no such worries and laughed at my nerves. Neither of them doubted my ability to finish. I was so self-absorbed that I forgot that my brother and his wife were also signed up for the half-marathon. In fact, I didn't remember them at all until my brother caught up with Mary and me during the first mile. With dawn just breaking, the corrals all packed, the national anthem sung, the gun sounded and we were off. Well, Dawn was off. She's the goal I aspire to!

A tower built in a sinkhole
Mary decided to walk with me the first mile. I need to learn pacing... and time management... and race strategy. My training is more like go-till-drop. Negative spit? I know what it is. I've never managed to achieve it.

Mary left me to run her race at Mile Marker 1. My nerves had settled and I was keeping what I thought was a slow, steady pace. I was chatting with other racers. I even stopped to check on the girl limping at along mile 2. She had  stress fracture in her foot and she thought she could make it. I know her pain and disappointment; nobody wants a DNF beside her name.

I picked out 5 people I wanted to try to keep in my sites. They were between the 5:45 and 6:30 pacers. Pink shorts and turquoise top, the couple in white, and the girl in black. I was ahead of all but  pink and turquoise for the first half of the race.

I was feeling really good at Mile Marker 5, until I checked my watch and I was way ahead of pace. I thought I was slowing down, but I was faster the next 3 miles. That's how you sink a race.

And then I got something in my shoe along the greenway on mile 8. That annoyance slowed me down, slowed me down enough to think and thinking isn't always my strong suit. I began doubting everything I was doing.  The girl in black passed me here. Mile Marker 9, I thought about quitting. I sat down and tried to get whatever was in my shoe out. That spot on my foot bothered me the rest of the way.
At Mile Marker 11, I knew I'd gone out way too fast. At the Candy Factory, the marathon/half-marathon split, I came to a complete stop. I could TURN RIGHT (Doctor Who reference!) and be done with the whole damn thing. I didn't want to do this. Why was I doing this? The couple in white passed me.

But I continued, and didn't let myself stop until after the split to check my foot again. Coming into the Fourth and Gill area, the course became incredibly lonely. I once again settled into a comfortable pace and tried to ignore my foot and the voice in the back of my head telling me to quit. Miles 17, 18, and 19 were horrible. I began feeling sick and had to stop a couple of times. That part of the course was a ghost town. I was losing site of the couple in white and I needed to catch up. I pushed until I passed them, then the 6:30 pacers passed me and I it was all I could do to keep picking my feet up.

Then I came to Mile Marker 20. I've done 20 miles before! I was almost done! Just 6 miles to go! Missy Kane, a local celebrity took this picture for me!

I could see the out and back that is Island Home from the bridge. The finish was so close. I began to feel better, a second wind.

My mom and Dawn and Mary's dog, Henry, were waiting for me just across the bridge. Then they drove a couple of miles ahead to watch through Island Home.

Island Home is just about 2 miles. "Two miles, out and back," the volunteers assured me. Except out and back is more like out and turn and turn and straight and turn and turn and turn and turn and turn... It's a never ending soul suck. And my absolute worst mile time. Nearly 20 minutes for one mile. OMFG! I didn't think I'd ever get out of there. On the way in I passed turquoise shirt on her way out. Pink shorts was nowhere in sight.

Mom was waiting with Henry at mile 23. H ran with me for a while. Gave me some spirit back. Dawn walked with me on mile 24 so she could more the car closer to the finish. I told here I was going to catch the girl in the turquoise shirt, but I didn't know how far ahead pink shorts was. And I got even more of my spirit back. Having cheerleaders along the course really helps.

And then the dreaded Mile Marker 25 was no longer dreaded. I had to navigate my way through a crowded Market Square (I may have passed the girl in black here, but it was crowded and I can't be sure), which was packed with finished marathoners already finishing up lunch. And then I was back at the start. And I ran, passing 8 stragglers, including turquoise shirt, along the last mile. I was tired, but I was done! Across the bridge, down a hill, up a hill, and into the stadium to the 50 yard line!

I got a faint feeling entering the shaded part of the stadium. I staggered, but stopping was out of the question. The   finish line was there. And I could run. And I could still walk at the finish, but I couldn't eat the steak that I'd wanted for a week.

My grin was permanently attached to my face. My time was nearly 40 minutes slower than I would have liked, but at the finish line it doesn't matter. I Am A Marathoner!
